Second breakfast

Yesterday – Friday 21st September 2012 – was 75 years since The Hobbit was first published, and the idea was to celebrate by having second breakfast at 11 am.

I was at work that day but decided to have my second breakfast at brew time that morning.

Although none of the people I work with have actually read The Hobbit, they were keen to join in.  I baked some bread and seed buns – OK it wasn’t as easy as that given my baking skills and the fact that it is years since I had tried to bake anything.  But I did try.  I didn’t fancy the seed cake recipe so made ordinary sponge buns with caraway seeds, and I made some oatmeal bread (with a rather singed crust)

One of my work colleagues made some cheese scones and some pumpkin seed bread and brought some homemade marmalade.

When we were about to begin eating they asked what it was all about, so I started to explain.  They asked if the book was “a bit like Harry Potter” and  someone said that she remembered it “coming out” – No she’s not that old Winking smile

I gave them a brief summary of the story whilst we enjoyed the feast.

I should add that I’m not really a breakfast eater – just coffee normally, then only a couple of slices of toast for lunch.  So the fact that I ate my share of 2nd breakfast explains why I didn’t eat anything else until suppertime.

  1. Looks really yummy! Plus it sounds like it was not only fun, but a great oportunity to spread the word about 'the hobbit' to those who have not read JRR Tolkien's work.
